Condom
Among the best-known articles made from rubber is the condom ( sometimes called a "rubber" ). It is made from vulcanized natural rubber and is probably the most effective contraceptive. It also protects from AIDS and other venereal diseases.
A condom is sometimes called a durex, but this is in fact a trade mark for one brand. The name is short for Durability Reliability Excellence.
In Australia, durex often has a completely different meaning: adhesive tape.
Usage
A condom is simply put on by rolling it down on the phallus. Note: If the use-by date is passed, it might not work properly, so always use condoms before that date.
Problems
A very serious problem is the improper use of condoms. Many people, especially youngsters, do not know how to use them properly and may even hurt themselves. Other problems that affect it can be manufacturing defects. Any hole or tear in a condom is likely to make it useless. When handling one, be careful if your fingernails are long or have rough edges.
Like all rubber products, condoms csn be damaged by contct with petroleum-based products. In particular, Vaseline should never be used as a lubricant with a condom.
Allergies
Usually, condoms are manufactured from latex, but there also are condoms made of silicone, a non-allergenic substance and as such suitable for persons with a latex allergy.
