An inflatable hood is typically a two layer hood made of latex or PVC that is designed to enclose the wearer's head completely. When air is pumped in between the layers, the wearer experiences an increase in pressure about their head while the outside of the hood swells. The air pocket formed deadens sound, so these hoods are frequently used in sensory deprivation play.

Air can be provided to the wearer in a number of ways, whether by having the mouth of the hood open, providing an oral breathing tube, having an integrated medical-style breathing mask, or having nose tubes. An inflatable hood can also be designed to let the wearer see, whether by having openings for the eyes, having inset transparent lenses, or being designed with "channels" through the hood that the wearer can see out of, capped off with transparent lenses. For sensory deprivation, the wearer should not be able to see.

Alternatively, hoods can be designed with integral parts that are inflated for decoration, such as hoods by Pretty Pervy or Mohawk hoods formerly made by d.vote.

Rubber's Finest has developed an inflatable hood that is encased by a latex-coated steel cage. This prevents the outer layer from expanding, increasing the pressure on the wearer's head.
