Collar (BDSM)
At the very minimum, a collar is a band of material around a person's neck. In the context of BDSM, collars can be decorative or functional. Collars can be made of various materials, including leather, rubber, metal or PVC. There are many options for fastening them, such as buckles, tab and strap designs, Velcro, and locking postsl the last has the advantage that the wearer cannot remove the collar without a key. Unless they are made of metal, collars are typically designed to fit snugly, tight enough to rest somewhere in the middle of the wearer's neck; however, they should bever be so tight as to impede breathing or blood flow.
The biggest difference between decorative and functional collars is attachment points; purely decorative collars will have none, while functional collars will have one or more, often D-rings. These attachment points can serve any number of functions, from having leashes clipped to them so that the wearer may led around by another, to having wrist cuffs clipped to them to keep the wearer's hands from getting in the way of someone else's activities. As with other similar objects, uses for these attachment points are limited solely by imagination and practical safety concerns.
A secondary difference between decorative and functional collars is the type of closure. Decorative collars are more likely to be fastened by snaps, buckles, Velcro, or other methods that allow their wearer to conveniently remove them. Functional collars are more likely to be fastened by methods that lock the collar in place, such as padlocks, preventing the wearer from removing them easily.
