Socks are tight-fitting covers for the wearer's feet and (usually) lower legs. They can be of various lengths but do not extend onto the torso, in contrast to leggings that extend over the hips, possibly up to the navel and don't necessarily cover the feet. Conventional socks are available from very short court shoe socks, protecting only the soles and lowest parts of the feet, to crotch high socks covering the legs completely. Latex socks are known to exist from ankle length upwards. They differ from stockings in being completely opaque and self-supporting, although long ones can be described as hold-ups.

Fetishes for socks in various materials, from nylon to wool and to latex, have been encountered. In sexual use cases socks have the advantage of not inhibiting the access to erogenous areas in the groin region, whereas tights and leggings require extra openings of the zipped or some other variety, or have to be partly removed.

Latex socks

Tight latex on a leg can enhance the visual aspects as well as offer a physical sensation to the wearer and the companion.

Visual implications include

  • Leaner legs
  • More pronounced curvature
  • Smoother
  • With suitable heels or sandals an impression of latex boots is possible, at least in photos

Sensations inflicted include

  • Touch
  • Protection
  • Warmth
  • Smoothness
  • Smell

Moulded

Moulded socks seldom offer a perfect representation of the curvature of the feet but accomplish the main functions of a sock.

Seamed

Seamed socks with multiple panels can be more closely fitting at the feet without being overtly tight in places. They usually have more variations available when it comes to multiple colors and decorations. Possibly the most commonly offered decoration is a back seam to imitate the early nylon socks, which were only available in the seamed variety.

Decorations

  • Fringes and frills in latex or other materials
  • Seams
  • Patterns
  • Studs

Other variations

Toe socks

Only one manufacturer is known to produce latex socks that have separate but non removable coverings for each toe. For some rubber and total coverage fetishists, separate coverings for all body features is a definitive plus.

Reinforced soles

Thin latex can be easily torn or even worn out by abrasion against the floor, especially from walking on hard or uneven surfaces. Some manufacturers have offered socks where the feet section is made of thicker latex to prolong the life expectancy.

Air hole

When the socks are put on some air might get trapped in the closed end of the socks, creating an unwanted inflated part. Removing that air can be difficult, if not dealt with before extending the sock fully onto the leg. Some users and manufacturers have added a very small, possibly reinforced, hole near the tip of the socks. This allows any trapped air to be pushed out much more easily.

The, for some users unfortunate, side effect of this is that any sweat can drip out of that hole, sweat which would otherwise accumulate slowly inside the socks. Likewise any external water may find it's way inside socks.

Dressing

Besides normal instructions for handling latex wear respectfully, some measures may make putting on latex socks easier.

  1. After you have made sure that the outside of the socks is dry and not likely to stick to itself, roll up the open end of the sock towards the ankle, making sure that the now thickening roll is on the outside. Try to make the start of the roll even and wrinkle free.
  2. Depending on the thickness of the material and personal experiences, you can either continue to roll up the sock just beyond the ankle or stop somewhere past the widest part of the calf.
  3. Now you can insert your toes all the way to their final position in the sock. Usually you don't want to stretch the sock lengthwise; otherwise it is likely to be too tight.
  4. If you have rolled up the sock beyond the ankle, pull the unrolled portion taut, extend your ankle and start unrolling.
  5. If the socks are too small or too thick for this method, unrolling past the widest part of the ankle can be difficult as the thick roll is not as elastic as the unrolled part. Then unroll the sock beyond the thin part at the ankle but without trying to get it over the heel, i.e. away from the foot, and carefully (watch your nails!) ease the unrolled portion over the heel.
  6. Stop extending your ankle and using your both hands, push out any trapped air from between the sock and the feet.
  7. If needed, pull gently the latex below the roll taut and start unrolling up the leg
  8. If the open end of the socks begins to roll down by itself, you can
    1. Use suspenders, or
    2. Fold a short section (2 to 5 cm or 1 to 2 inches) of the open end inwards. The outer membrane is likely to compress the open end enough to keep it in place. This is naturally not possible when the sock incorporates a decoration on or near the open end.

Often, the easiest way to remove a sock is to roll the socks to the calf or ankle and then pull them from the roll, in effect turning them inside out. The roll can then be unrolled. The side that was in contact with the oil-releasing skin should be washed thoroughly to prolong the socks' lifespan. To ensure thorough drying, leave inside out until the inside has air dried, then turn the sock the right way out.
